The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Mrs Adefunke Anoma, has warned parents, especially mothers, not to engage their children in hawking during the holidays.
She told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti that children were vulnerable to abuse during hawking.
Anoma said that girls could be raped by unsuspecting males under the pretext that they wanted to buy things from them.
She advised parents and guardians to always fend for their children and wards before, during and after the holidays.
According to her, the Nigerian constitution is against putting children under compulsory labour.
She cited Section 34, Sub-Section 1c, that says, “no person shall be required to perform compulsory labour,” to buttress herself.
The chairperson, therefore warned parents to desist from engaging their children in compulsory labour, saying children have rights under the law.
