CHEIRMAN of the Delta Bureau for State Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, has commended the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), for ensuring the protection of women and children across the world.
Sir Ogidi-Gbegbaje stated this recently during a courtesy visit by the leadership of FIDA to the Bureau at the Conference Hall of the Olorogun Felix Ibru Secretariat, Asaba.
According to the chairman, the good works of FIDA have helped in the fight against girl-child abuse, maltreatment of children and rising cases of domestic violence.
He said that as a body, FIDA had continuously advocated for the rights of the common man, fought for the oppressed and those who lack the resources to fight for themselves.
His words: “If FIDA was not in existence, a lot of people would have gotten away with the terrible things they did to their fellow human beings, especially sexual harassment, child abuse, to mention but a few.”
He stated that the society is pervaded with violence. People have become so inhuman, such that “instead of loving our neighbours as ourselves, neighbours now conspire to kidnap neighbours, or even assassinate fellow neighbours.”
He commended FIDA for its humanitarian services and efforts in ensuring that the laws that guide the society are respected and the rights and privileges of every citizen are protected.
Earlier, president of FIDA, Stellamaris Mejulu, briefed the bureau chairman on the association’s achievements and recalled how the Bureau Chairman, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, assisted FIDA in hosting 33 states of the federation in 2021.
According to her, FIDA came into Nigeria in 1964, making it 60 years this year and that the Body was planning its 60th anniversary in November.
Mejulu assured the Bureau that FIDA will continue to protect the girl-child against violence, domestic abuse and battery of women by husbands which is taking a dangerous dimension in recent times.
