FG’s policy direction guard against insurgency —Ngige

MINISTER of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has said the policy direction of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is aimed at securing the country from misguided insurgents and other criminal elements.

This was as he appealed to militants bombing oil facilities in the Niger Delta region to cease fire, retrace their steps and embrace peace in the national interest.

He said this in his goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the 40th Conference and Expo of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), held in Port Harcourt, on Thursday.

He said the various programmes of the Federal Government were also geared towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.

Ngige, represented by the Rivers State coordinator of the National Directorate for Employment (NDE), Mr Nnamdi Asomogha, also asserted that the government sought to promote economic growth and wealth creation, through a vigorous war against corruption.

The minister emphasised the fact the Niger Delta region contributes significantly to the wealth of the country, but expressed worries about the renewed militancy in the region.

“The rise in militancy, which goal is to disrupt the nation’s oil industry, is a negative development to the region and the country in general. I call on those involved in this condemnable path to please retrace their steps and embrace peace,” he said.

Speaking on the programmes of the Buhari-led administration, Ngige said, “The Federal Government has put in place a regime of prudent and transparent management of the national resources, through the elimination of waste and leakages.

“But we must take cognisance of the fact that the general improvement in the affairs of the country requires the support of good people of the country, rather than the disruptive activities of some elements,” he said.

It was in this regard that the minister called on the National Optometric Association (NOA) to key into the national objectives by partnering with the government to bring about a robust health care delivery system.
