In a move set to redefine Nigeria’s cultural landscape, Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy (FMACCE), has unveiled a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the nation’s creative sector.
The presentation took place at the UN House in Abuja during the diplomatic and international development partners forum on Monday.
This forum, a cornerstone initiative by FMACCE, is designed to spotlight the vast opportunities within Nigeria’s burgeoning creative economy, encompassing arts, culture, and innovation. Musawa highlighted that the sector is a pivotal driver of employment, particularly for Nigeria’s youth.
The strategic roadmap aims to foster cross-sector and international collaboration, leveraging the creative potential of young Nigerians to achieve substantial growth. Musawa emphasised that this presentation is a crucial step towards securing sustainable partnerships and support, reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to become Africa’s creative capital.
“Today represents a milestone in unlocking Nigeria’s cultural and creative potential,” Musawa declared. Since 2023, the Ministry has been on a transformative path, guided by ‘The 8 Point Plan,’ which focuses on growth, innovation, and sustainability.”
The roadmap emphasises skill development, policy reform, and cultural heritage preservation, with the ultimate goal of stimulating economic growth and job creation through creative industries. Musawa called on artists, stakeholders, diplomatic partners, and policymakers to unite in this transformative effort, showcasing Nigeria’s artistic talent to the global stage.
The minister praised President Bola Tinubu for his role in establishing the ministry, acknowledging his visionary support as instrumental to the ministry’s success since its inception in August 2023.
UNESCO’s Head of Office and Country Representative in Nigeria, Abdourahamane Diallo, praised the initiative, reaffirming UNESCO’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s cultural and creative sectors. Diallo highlighted UNESCO’s alignment with the 2005 convention for the protection and promotion of cultural expressions, emphasising ongoing collaboration to foster a supportive environment for diverse cultural expressions.
The forum saw participation from cultural officers, diplomats, and stakeholders from various countries including Spain, Brazil, Bangladesh, the UK, China, India, Gambia, and Ghana, reflecting broad international support for Nigeria’s creative sector ambitions.
As Nigeria embarks on this ambitious journey, the strategic roadmap signals a new era of cultural and economic revitalisation, promising to enhance the nation’s global cultural footprint and economic prosperity.
