The Federal Government has announced that efforts are underway to release a definitive policy program addressing the sea-time challenges faced by Nigerian seafarers.
Speaking on Thursday in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, during the 2023 Cadets Graduation ceremony of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, emphasized that Nigeria’s maritime industry plays a pivotal role in its economic growth and development. It relies on seafarers to maintain the integrity and reputation of the industry.
Represented by the Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Babatunde Bombata, Gboyega Oyetola stated, “I am deeply honored to stand before you today as we celebrate the remarkable achievements of the young men and women about to embark on a new chapter of their lives.
Today is not just a day of graduation; it is a day of commencement, symbolizing the dedication, hard work, and resilience these cadets exhibited throughout their rigorous training.”
Addressing the graduating cadets, he extended heartfelt congratulations, acknowledging their successful navigation of the challenges of the maritime academy. He reminded them that the sea is vast and unpredictable, akin to the opportunities and challenges ahead, but their training equips them with the knowledge and skills needed.
Highlighting the importance of the maritime industry, Oyetola recognized the dedication of the academy’s staff, reassuring that the government’s commitment to transforming the maritime sector is genuine.
Prioritizing the maritime sector aligns with the renewed hope agenda, contributing to economic, social, and environmental aspects while fostering overall national development.
Concerning the challenges of placing cadets on sea-time, he assured stakeholders that a definite policy program would be developed to address this issue, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the transformation of the maritime industry.
The Rector of MAN Oron, Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd), encouraged the new graduates to display high-level professionalism and humility in their careers. He emphasized the Academy’s standing as on par or superior to most maritime training institutions globally, with state-of-the-art facilities and technologies.
Capt. Tajudeen Alao, President of the National Association of Master Mariners, urged the Rector to fine-tune the Academy’s curriculum to meet current realities. He reminded the graduates of the challenges ahead, emphasising the Academy’s preparation for a successful career and opportunities in the Blue Economy. He also urged them to be good ambassadors of the country, promoting environmental responsibility in their roles.
In conclusion, the National President of NAMM donated N100,000 each to the best graduating cadets in both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma, reinforcing the industry’s support for their future endeavours.
