FG to install CCTV on Lagos-Calabar coastal highway

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced plans to review the 750km Coastal Highway project, spanning from Lagos to Calabar, to include lay-bys for quick emergency interventions along the route.

Umahi made this statement on December 20, 2024, during an inspection of Sections I and II of the project in Lagos, which is being handled by Hitech Construction Company Ltd.

The Minister explained that the highway would be equipped with CCTV systems to ensure seamless movement and optimal security along the entire stretch.

According to him, “We’re going to plant trees and also include lay-bys. We can decide to have a lay-by every five kilometers, where we connect all our CCTV cameras.

“We’ll station vehicles and security personnel in cabins at these points to ensure a response time of about 10 minutes.

“I’m sure you’ve witnessed what we implemented on the Third Mainland Bridge. That’s exactly what we plan to replicate across all our highways.

“For the entire 750 kilometers to Calabar, the road will be under CCTV surveillance, powered by solar energy. Every five, 10, or 15 kilometers—depending on agreement—we will have portable cabins with security posts. There will be no road obstructions, and we’ll establish viewing centers to monitor the road in both directions.”

The Minister added that these enhancements would be incorporated into the review of the legacy road project.
