Babatunde Fashola, MInister of Works and Housing
THE Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has called for standard regulations in the practice of Quantity surveying profession in the country.
Fashola made the call while inaugurating the Board of Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN), on Tuesday in Abuja.
Apart from the board’s statutory role, the minister said it should bear the responsibility of educating the public.
“I will like to see the institute and the board to come out for public discourse in terms of cost and quality of delivery of infrastructure across the country.
“There are assumptions that certain time infrastructure will be delivered at certain cost irrespective of the topography of certain terrain.
“Even if the quantity and design are the same, if the topography is different clearly you will have cost differences.
“It is good you speak on these matters for the enlightenment of the public, especially at street level to avoid professional terminologies,“ he said.
Fashola said that the issue of cost of project delivery in the country was a matter of concern.
The minister, however, urged the board to lead a debate on matters concerning the profession so that people would be enlightened.
He urged members of the board to use the three year tenure to enhance the sector.
He assured the board members of the ministry’s support to effectively discharge their functions and responsibilities.
Responding on behalf of the board, the Chairman, Mr Muritala Aliyu promised to be proactive in discharging their duties.
“We are going to ensure competence and compliance with laid down rules and regulations.
Aliyu requested for pre-budgeting and institutional backing to guide the board’s inputs into infrastructure and public private participation for professionalism.
