Ex-militants in the Niger Delta region will soon heave a sigh of relief, as the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh, on Sunday, assured the ex-militants of payment of their monthly stipends as from today.
The assurance for the payment of the stipends was given in a statement signed by Piriye Kiyaramo of the Media and Communication Department of the Amnesty and made available to journalists in Akure, the Ondo State capital. He appealed to the ex- militants in the region to shelve the planned protests slated for today.
Boroh, who expressed concerns over the plights of the ex-agitators in respect of their delayed stipends, explained that President Muhammandu Buhari appreciated their patience, saying the delay in the payment of their stipends was already being addressed by the ministry.
According to the amnesty boss, President Buhari attached so much importance to the amnesty programme, noting that the president, in his inaugural address to the nation, specifically promised “to invest heavily in the projects and programmes currently in place for the ex-agitators in the region.”
The coordinator of the presidential amnesty programme, who commended the ex-agitators and the people of the Niger Delta for their usual cooperation, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government in making the amnesty programme run better for the benefit of the 30, 000 ex-agitators and other youths in the region.
Boroh said: “President Muhammadu Buhari is already putting together a youth development and empowerment package that will directly impact the ex-agatators and other youths in the region.”
He said protests on major roads would not be the solution, as such protests could be hijacked by hoodlums who would use the occasion to disrupt public peace in the affected areas in the region.
Boroh thanked the state governors in the region for their role in maintaining law and order, while thanking the leadership of the ex-agitators for their cooperation in these challenging times.
