FG renews commitment towards repatriation of over 10,000 displaced citizens

Federal Government has unveiled plans towards repatriation of over 10,000 Nigerians living in neighbouring countries.

The affected citizens were displaced by insurgents from their ancestral homes across the North Eastern states.

The newly appointed Honourable Commissioner National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs (NCFRMI), Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani Aliyu gave the assurance during a media chat in Abuja.

While responding to a question on the planned repatriation of thousands of Nigerians who fled and currently reside in neighboring countries as a result of Boko Haram attacks, he said: “already arrangement is on ground to repatriate all our people who are in Cameroon and then also to repatriate those that are here and wanted to go back to their countries.

“That effort is being put in place and by the grace of God sooner or later we will disengage them from the camps they were staying,” Aliyu noted.

According to him, about “10,000 Nigerians who are living in neighboring countries are to be repatriated from Cameroon to Nigeria.

“From Niger and Sudan, we have barely about 7,000 of them, though some of them were in Kano particularly people from Sudan and we are making frantic efforts to ensure that we resettle them.”

With about 20 IDP camps located across the FCT, Aliyu noted that the Federal Government did not build any IDP camps in the FCT, however unveiled the present administration’s plans to build more IDP camps in various states across the Federation.

He said: “the camps we built were in six states. One in Nasarawa State is located in Keffi; one in Zamfara State, one in Katsina, one in Kano and one in Edo State.

“These are the six camps that we constructed and very soon we are going to expand them.

“Not only expanding to other States, we are also expanding a number of camps that we are building, at least we should be able to house not less than 10 to 20,000 households in each of these camps.”
