THE Federal Government has restated its commitment towards ensuring that every Nigerian child is given access to quality education describing the children as building blocks of peace in the society requiring right education.
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu made the pledge on Monday in Abuja at the 2017 Commonwealth Day celebration marked with colourful parade of Nations by the school children.
Recent reports indicated that Nigeria has over 10.5 million out-of-school children roaming the streets of the country.
But Adamu observed that if children at an early age are offered the right education, taught the rudiments of patriotism and civil responsibility the kind of peace required for progress and development would be entrenched.
He said: “I am happy to say that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has put in place a number of strategies aimed at boosting education. The Federal ministry of education takes the issue of education of the Nigerian child seriously.”
Meanwhile, the Queen of England and Head of the Commonwealth, Elizabeth II, has called on leaders of all the 51 member nations of the Commonwealth to ensure peace-building in order to create a fair and just society for all.
She urged nations to uphold justice and rule of law as well as striving for societies that “are fair and offer opportunities for all,” saying with that the countries would overcome division and find reconciliation for the benefits of progress and prosperity could be multiplied and shared.
Queen’s message entitled Peace-Building Commonwealth was read at the occasion by the Director, Education Support Service, Mrs Justina Ibe, where she also called on nations to continue to collaborate with one another in the spirit of goodwill to build a peaceful and future for all the Commonwealth citizens.
