FG rail project: Ogun Assembly to meet FG, contractors on affected access roads

Ogun State House of Assembly has promised to meet the Federal Government on the state of access roads cut off as a result of the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Ibadan light rail project.
The Assembly on Thursday assured residents of the over 70 communities along Laderin in Obafemi-Owode Local Government area of the state of its resolve to help channel their plight to the Federal Government through the National Assembly for immediate provision of access roads and water to the affected areas.
Speaking at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, also said the Assembly will liaise with the contractor working on the road, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) with a view to provide palliative measures for the affected communities.
Olumo said this shortly after a member representing Abeokuta South State Constituency, Hon. Ademuyiwa Adeyemi laid a petition written by members of the affected communities before plenary on Thursday.
The representative of the communities and Chairman of Abule Ake Community Development Association, Mr Akintunde Farooq, stated that since the construction of the rail project commenced, the affected communities had been cut off with other parts of Abeokuta, the state capital, while their water source had been affected.
Responding, Oluomo said the project was aimed at improving the economy of the state and the nation and not to create an untold hardship on residents of the communities on whose land the rail track was being laid.
He noted that people’s welfare should not be sacrificed for the laudable project of the Federal Government, adding that a holistic assessment of the petition would be carried out.
