FG partners Iran in automobile manufacturing, agriculture

The Federal Government, on Monday, expressed its willingness to partner with the Islamic Republic of Iran in areas of assembling automobiles, importation of tractors and agricultural equipment to ease the farming and transportation needs of Nigerians.

This was made known by the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, when the Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Mohammed Alibak, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

According to Akume, the proposed partnership was not only a welcome development about also a timely one as the Federal Government was in the process of procuring vehicles for Nigerians through cooperative societies domiciled in the Ministry of Agriculture.

The minister, according to a statement made available to Tribune Online by the Deputy Director, Press, in the minister, Osagie Jacobs Julie, stated that the procurement of the vehicles would be done in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation as part of efforts aimed at lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

Akume appreciated the resilience of the Iranian state, which he said had recorded breakthroughs in the area of technology.

“I will welcome exchange programmes between both countries and hope that a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed in the nearest future to seal the cooperation for Nigeria to tap from Iran’s expertise,” the minister was quoted to have said.

Earlier, Ambassador Alibak advocated better bilateral relations between his country and Nigeria, which described as a very important country in West Africa and the African continent as a whole as a result of its large population.

The Iranian ambassador noted that Nigeria had maintained good cooperation with international organisations.

Iran, according to the statement, has leading manufacturing industries in the fields of automobiles manufacturing, transportation, construction materials, information technology and petrochemicals.
