President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a probe into all projects executed in the nine newly established Federal Universities across the country.
The directive according to President Buhari, was to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of resources.
Buhari issued the directive on Tuesday, while delivering a speech during the maiden convocation of Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), in Ebonyi State.
He noted that his administration will not condone corruption in the Federal Universities, stressing that varsities must endeavour to occupy the front burner in the anti-corruption crusade of the government.
The President, who was represented by the executive secretary National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Rasheed Adamu Abubakar, reiterated that universities must exhibit exemplary character in good governance and financial management.
He opined, “No room for corruption in the academic sector, we will tour all projects executed by our new federal universities, to ensure that funds allocated to them are judiciously utilised,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, commended the Federal Government for establishing the new universities, stating that the institutions currently has seven faculties and 52 programmes.
“This year we had accreditation visits by the national university commission to our Anatomy, Bio technology, Statistics and Fine and Applied Arts programmes,” he said.
“Out of the 124 grandaunts, 15 emerged in First class,75 in the Second Class Upper, and 34 in the second Class Lower Divisions,” he concluded.
Highlights of the event was the award of 1st degrees and Prizes, and award of Appreciation Commendation letters, to distinguished Personalities who had supported the development of the university.
