FG moves to reduce mortgage loan interests in 2017

The Federal Government will move towards providing mortgage loans at a reduced interest rate for civil servants in the country to boost housing provision in 2017.

This was made known by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, in Abuja, last week, when giving update on the housing units built for federal civil servants located at Life Camp in Abuja

According to her, the prospect of mortgage loans being reduced has been boosted after she had a discussion with the management of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) on the need to provide mortgage loans at a reduced interest rate for civil servants.

She noted that over 8000 civil servants had already subscribed for the 3000 housing units made available for federal civil servants.

The estate is an affordable housing scheme project under construction by the federal government.

According to her, the project is part of the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) programme for workers by the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. She disclosed that over 8000 civil servants had already registered for the FISH programme, which is aimed at providing affordable housing for the core Federal civil servants.

The Head of Service stressed that provision of affordable housing for the civil servants had been her main priority since assumption of office as Head of Civil Service of the Federation, a move she said gave rise to the introduction of FISH programme. “I am standing on the strong vision of President Muhammadu Buhari led administration to provide affordable housing for Nigerians. Civil servants are part of the population that are very much in need of housing,” she said.

Oyo-Ita noted that it was rather unfortunate that while the military, paramilitary and other agencies of government had similar housing programmes to alleviate the problems of shelter in Abuja, the core civil servants who, she insisted bore the burden of implementation of government policies and programmes, had been neglected.

But she pointed out that this anomaly would be corrected with the FISH scheme.
