FG launches waterways transportation code

To curb incessant boat mishaps and attract investors to the nation’s inland waterways, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, launched the first-ever waterways transportation code for inland waterways regulation in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Tuesday.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations 2023 and commissioning of Police buildings, hydrographic survey boats, water ambulances, and other projects, Oyetola urged the National Assembly to ensure the speedy passage of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Act.

He also urged NIWA to ensure the enforcement of the regulations, stating that the codes would drastically reduce accidents on the waterways.

Oyetola emphasized the need to improve Nigeria’s balance of trade, strengthen the value of the Naira, and create employment, aligning with the current administration’s goals.

He commended NIWA for its efforts in bringing the Water Transportation Code to fruition after several years.

The code will guide boat operators, regulate passenger conduct, and provide a framework for potential investors in water transportation. Oyetola urged NIWA to enforce the regulations effectively.

The Managing Director of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, called for consideration of NIWA in the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF). He highlighted the efforts made since his appointment to improve the working environment and address challenges within NIWA.

He also unveiled new boats and equipment for surveillance, enforcement, emergency response, and hydrographic surveying.

Additionally, facilities at the headquarters in Lokoja were presented for commissioning to improve efficiency, including a 2-storey office building, a primary healthcare centre, a security post, a reception building, and a fire truck.

Oyebamiji emphasized the need for support from the government and stakeholders to address challenges and achieve NIWA’s mandates, including the speedy passage of the NIWA Act and funding for key projects such as capital dredging and the completion of the inland port at Ganaja, Lokoja.
