FG committed to police welfare ― IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has said that the Federal Government is committed to the welfare of officers and men of the police force and as such, the challenges facing the Force are being tackled.

Adamu stated this during his meeting with officers and men of the Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Tuesday.

Speaking further, the IGP said on the issue of inadequate manpower, the Federal Government was in the process of recruiting more policemen, which would address the issue of inadequate personnel.

“On the issue of patrol vehicles, which is a major challenge across all the commands, we will be distributing patrol vehicles very soon, but they are not the normal ones you are familiar with; these patrol vehicles will be fitted with gadgets to make your work easier,” he told the police personnel.

He also said: “We are also acquiring body armours, helmets, among other things, for those going out on operations, and this will help save our men when they come in contact with bad people.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu had commended the leadership style of the IGP.

Olukolu said that despite the challenges facing the command, officers and men, with the support of the IGP, had been giving their best in the discharge of their duties.

The Oyo State police boss then highlighted some of the challenges facing the command like inadequate manpower, logistics problem and shortage of patrol vehicles, as well as inadequate police drivers.

“However, despite the challenges, with the commitment of our men, we have been able to achieve a lot, and that is why the state has been relatively peaceful.

“We are using the community policing strategy encompassing proactive policing, visibility policing, intelligence-led raid, aggressive vehicle patrol, stop and search, partnership with the public, inter-agency synergy and collaboration and other modern policing strategies to achieve appreciable success.

“The state government and members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), media and other strategic stakeholders have also been supporting us, and we are committed to providing adequate security to the people of the state,” Olukolu said.

The Inspector-General of Police also addressed officers and men of the command privately on the issue of their welfare.

The police boss had, on Monday, participated in the South-West Security Summit in Ibadan, which had in attendance governors of the states in the geo-political zone.
