FG commissions, handover erosion works in Lagos

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has formally Commissioned and handed over the 1.42 kilometres Erosion Works in the Egbe-Idimu area of Lagos State.

He was represented by a member, Federal House of Representatives, Honourable Ayo Hulayat Omidiran.

He said the Federal Government responded to the yearning of the indigenes and members of the communities by approving this project among the 27 Ecological intervention projects for the Second Quarter of 2017.

Buhari said the project was in keeping faith with the present administration’s promise that no part of the country would be neglected due to its geographical location or political leanings.

He added that the completion of the Project has further demonstrated his commitment to addressing problems confronting various communities across the Country.

He said: “This Federal Government’s intervention has finally stemmed the fears of perennial flooding and, its consequential threat to the peace of mind of the surrounding communities.”

The lawmaker in her own remarks commended the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha and the Ecological Fund Office (EFO) for executing the gigantic project that alleviates the plight of the people in the beneficiary communities.

Ayo Omidiran, also thanked the Executive Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode and the entire people of Lagos State, for their cooperation and facilitation of a rancour-free environment during the project execution.

She appealed to the State and the entire community to cherish the laudable project and protect it from any abuse.

Permanent Secretary of Ecological Fund Office (EFO), Dr Mrs Habiba Lawal also represented by the the Director, Drought, Desertification and Zonal Management (DDZ), Alhaji Yusuf Addy, in a welcome address stated that the Federal Government received quite a number of requests regarding the need and desirability to embark on this project.

She noted that the risk of flooding and silting, compounded by its negative consequences necessitated the prompt intervention of the Federal Government; in effecting a holistic Erosion and Flood Control that would stand the test of time and address the issue of flood and erosion menace, caused by infrastructural decay over the years.

The Consultant of the Project, while explaining the scope of work informed that the Project was 1.42km which included the provision of drainage on both sides, with thirty-two (32) minor culverts and thirteen (13) major culverts. According to him, the drainage consisted of four (4) dimensions which are 60 x 60cm 90 x 90cm, 1.2 x 1.2m and 2.4 x 2.4m this scope depicts that, the Project was quite a big one, by the Federal Government.
