FG commissions 16 projects at Sokoto psychiatric hospital

As part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government has commissioned 16 state-of-the-art projects at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Kware, in Sokoto State.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, who inaugurated the projects on Wednesday, said the initiative reflects the administration’s strategic vision to strengthen healthcare institutions across the country.

“President Tinubu is committed to strengthening the nation’s health system through improved infrastructure, skilled manpower, better funding, and robust support mechanisms,” Salako stated.

He commended the management of FNPH Kware for their prudent use of government resources, noting that the newly completed projects include a Molecular Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, Regional Women and Children Drug Dependency Treatment Centre, Accident and Emergency Centre, Multipurpose Student Hostel, School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing, ICT Centre, and alternative power systems, among others.

“These projects will significantly improve patient care and outcomes, enhancing the hospital’s ability to serve the community,” he added.

Salako disclosed that more than 500 key infrastructure projects and modern medical equipment have been delivered to federal tertiary health institutions across Nigeria. He added that over 15,000 health workers were recruited within the past year, supported by ongoing professional development and the Nigeria Digital in Health Initiative.

To address the persistent power challenges in hospitals, the Federal Government is deploying renewable energy solutions and plans to convene a National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector to attract sustainable investment.

He further revealed that a Social Action Fund has been approved to support 109 communities in implementing community-owned health projects. He also announced the forthcoming launch of the Renewed Hope Health Connect — a fully funded intervention that will provide one million vulnerable Nigerians with essential medical, surgical, ophthalmological, and audiological care.

Speaking on mental health reforms, the minister highlighted the ongoing implementation of the Nigerian National Mental Health Act 2023. This includes the creation of a mental health desk and a plan to establish a dedicated department within the ministry.

“Key priorities include integrating mental health into primary care, decriminalizing suicide, reducing stigma, and regulating involuntary seclusion.”

Also speaking at the event, Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruku Wurno, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to its partnership with FNPH Kware.

He noted that the hospital’s integrated healthcare model has broadened opportunities for collaboration.
