FG approves creation of Police studies institute to enhance professionalism

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of the National Institute of Police Studies in order to enhance professionalism in the force and to enable them to perform optimally in the face security challenges around the country.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu revealed this on Tuesday while speaking at the official launching of a book titled “Introduction to Law Enforcement: A Training Guide for the Nigeria Police Force” authored by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi in Abuja

Adamu stated that the institute, when established, would provide strategic manpower development programmes for Police and other law enforcement officers of the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police and or its equivalent in other security agencies.

According to him, “it will work with academic partners, security agencies, international police organisations and the public to produce and commission research on priority areas for policing and public safety.

“The ultimate goal of all these efforts is to produce a pool of highly trained Police personnel at both junior and strategic levels who will have the intellectual capacity and critical reasoning ability to dissect and respond to current crime trends and future dynamics of security threats in the most professionally efficient manner.”

Adamu stated that the book launched as an “intellectual effort by a cerebral officer who draws from his rich and expansive professional experience to leave a lasting legacy of human development for his primary constituency, the Nigeria Police.”

He said the book was a brilliant attempt to enlarge the frontiers of knowledge of the Police officers and fill the capacity development gap which had been an issue in policing in Nigeria.

Adamu said the book encompasses virtually all the core areas of policing and it captures most important topics in the entry-level training curriculum across all cadres.

He urged all to strive to make modest contributions to their professional institutions while in service and retirement.

He said the focus of the book shall be an invaluable reference source in not just the training of recruit constables but also other strategic police leaders.

Also speaking, the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, described the book as a training manual which meets the aspirations to develop the capacity of the Nigeria Police in line with global best practices.

According to him, “I consider this book an excellent study material that will expose the recruits to the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed not only in college but in their career. I welcome this initiative and I would like to seize this opportunity to express the readiness of the Ministry of Police Affairs under my leadership to collaborate with organisations and individuals with programmes that would contribute meaningfully to the ongoing police reform for improved performance.”

In his remark, the author, former DIG, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said that he was motivated to write the book due to the gap in terms of reference materials for training for the Police in the country.
