THE Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State has matriculated over 6,614 students for its 2018/2019 academic year.

Speaking at the 25th matriculation ceremony of the institution in Offa on Tuesday, Rector of the institution, Dr Lateef Olatunji, said that pressure mounted by parents and guardians over 2018/2019 admission exercise forced management of the institution to organise ceremony ahead of other institutions.

The Rector, who said that the matriculation ceremony marked the end of the admission exercise for the academic session, said that about 2,400 full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) students, 2,214 full-time National Diploma (ND) students and over 2,000 part-time students were matriculated.

Dr Olatunji said that the institution was among most sought after due to its stable academic calendar, adding that all its programmes were fully accredited at the ND and HND levels with seasoned lecturers.

The rector, who said that curricular of the Polytechnic was geared towards national manpower needs, added that it aimed to make graduates self-independent and job creators.

“The Polytechnic has an entrepreneurship development centre that trains students in practical skills that will be beneficial to them apart from their courses of studies,” he said.

He also admonished the students to be a leader and make a positive impact in everything they do, saying that concern of every educational institution today was to raise a new generation of leaders for the nation.

‘A leader must show signs of leadership responsibility now because responsibility is the price of greatness. You must, therefore, be very disciplined. It is your alignment now that will determine your greatness and achievements in life. We already have our records here, I charge you to break the record and set new ones,” he said.

Talking on the impending strike action by the ASUP, Dr Olatunji charged academic unions in the country to change their orientation, saying that governments and unions should embrace more of dialogue.

The rector, who said that academic teachers in the developed world do have issues too with the government, said that their orientation of dialogue rather than strike actions had helped smooth and stable academic calendar and amicable relationship.
