Federation Cup: Crown sends Rangers packing

Nigeria Professional Football League title contenders, Enugu Rangers, have been knocked out of the 2016 Federation Cup otherwise known as the Challenge Cup.

Rangers were beaten 2-1 by a Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Crown FC in a Round of 16 game decided on Tuesday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

Second-half substitute, Bello Owello, netted the winner for the Ogbomoso-based side after Peter Michael had scored the opener in the 28th minute.

Godwin Aguda brought back the Flying Antelopes into the game, but that did not stop the exit of the team from the competition which they last won in 1983 then as Challenge Cup.

Rangers head coach, Imama Amapakabo, told supersport.com: “We underrated Crown from the beginning and we opened up ourselves too much in defence.

“We also failed to take the chances that came our way at the other end. It was a strange game and we just did not play to our usual level. We were not organised enough.

“It is a disappointing day for all fans of our great club, but right now we just have to lift ourselves up and concentrate on the league.”

Meanwhile, in another round of 16 Federation Cup played on Tuesday at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi, title holders, Akwa United qualified for the quarter-final following their 8-7 victory over fellow NPFL side, Sunshine Stars of via penalties, after the regulation time had ended in a stalemate.
