Federal Poly Ado shut indefinitely over violent protest

THE Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti has been shut indefinitely following violent protest by students.

The students were protesting the death of two of them in alleged mysterious health circumstances.

It was claimed that trouble began on the institution’s campus late Friday, when two of the students reportedly complained of malaria fever.

They were said to have been rushed to the institution’s health centre for treatment but the sources claimed that their condition later aggravated and they were said to have died in the early hours of Saturday.

The news that their colleague had died infuriated the students, who quickly mobilized themselves and marched to the Health Centre, and burnt it down.

Apart from also destroying some other property on sight, the students blocked all roads leading to and from the institution and disallowed free movement of vehicles.

One of the students who asked not to be mentioned, decried the attitude of the polytechnic to their welfare and wellbeing, claiming that their welfare was poorly handled.

The students alleged that their health centre lacked requisite drugs and equipment.

Though the polytechnic authorities did not confirm the death of any student, the Registrar of the institution, Mrs Sade Adediran in a statement, announced the “immediate and indefinite closure” of the school.

The statement warned that any student found on campus after the closure would be apprehended and made to face the consequence.
