The lawmaker representing Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has empowered about 1000 market men and women from the two local government with cash grants of over N50m.
Speaking during the distribution of the cash grants to market men and women, the lawmaker said the gesture was aimed to support the market women and men to support them and empower them financially.
Tunji-Ojo who was represented by his Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Akadri Atinuke, described the beneficiaries as the main stay of the small and medium businesses in every economy of any country.
He said the gestures was also to help reduce poverty level and hardship among the less privileged as well as to strengthing the economy of the constituency.
According to him, the gesture is to fulfil part of his electoral promises to the market women who are important drivers of the constituency’s economy, saying the gesture would boost the morales of the constituents.
He encouraged the beneficiaries to continue to work hard and make good use of the opportunity to raise and expand their businesses.
He said “Akoko North East and Akoko North West Local governments are the economic hub of Akoko. We promised to invest in the prosperity of Akoko and this is what we are doing today. We will not stop here.
“This empowerment programme was to appreciate members of this Constituency for their support during the election and reduce poverty, restore hope to the downtrodden”
One of the beneficiaries, Alhaja Muhammed Risikat apprreciated Tunji-Ojo for the gesture, and prayed to God to continue to bless him and strengthen him to do more.
She said, “This initiative will help boost our trades and expand the economic capacity of our people in this Federal Constituency. We appreciate BTO for fulfilling his promises always. He will continue to prosper.”
The empowerment is coming weeks after the lawmaker also distributed N50m bursary to students in the Federal Constituency.
The leadership of the communities also commended Tunji-Ojo over his infrastructural drive and employment opportunities facilitated by him to the people of the state.
