The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has received and commissioned two motorized solar-powered boreholes from the Amazons for Impact and Development Initiative, an NGO.
The boreholes were installed at the Shining Star Orphanage Home in Lugbe-AMAC and the Hajia Hadiza Ibrahim Motherless Home in Gwagwalada.
During the commissioning ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, highlighted the importance of charitable ventures in complementing government initiatives and bringing development to underserved areas.
He emphasized that the intervention by the Amazons Initiative would have a lasting impact on the beneficiaries and contribute to the government’s efforts in improving the lives of residents in the Territory.
Adesola urged for the effective use and protection of the facility and other government infrastructure, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of everyone to safeguard these resources for collective maximum advantage.
He encouraged the private sector and other potential partners to take advantage of the business environment provided by the Administration and contribute through their corporate social responsibility policies to help provide assistance to indigent communities.
Founder and Chairman of the Initiative, Dame Dr. (Mrs.) Ebele Ulasi explained that the decision to install the solar boreholes was driven by the recognition that water is essential for life.
The Initiative, with the support of its sponsors, embarked on the project to provide clean drinking water to selected orphanages in the FCT. The theme “One Orphanage: One Borehole” was conceived as a way to address the lack of potable water in these homes.
Ulasi emphasized that the solar boreholes would ensure a sustainable and uninterrupted water supply for the orphanages and their inhabitants. She described the borehole as a lifeline, a source of vitality, and a symbol of hope. The initiative aims to create a nurturing environment for the children and expresses gratitude for the dedication and resilience of the staff and volunteers involved.
The Chairman of AMAC, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, represented by Hon. Dantani Zandna, commended the gesture of the NGO and urged them to provide a list of their needs so that the council could offer further support.
