FCTA, Boundary Commission move to recover FCT borders

Mallam Bello Muhammad

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said it will collaborate with the National Boundary Commission to ensure recovery and protection against future abuse of its boundary areas that have been encroached upon.

FCTA Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, made this known in Abuja when a delegation from the commission, led by its Director-General, Dr Muhammad Ahmad, paid him a working visit.

He said the FCTA administration would work with the commission to carry out projects within reasonable costs, to ensure that the boundary areas around the territory were demarcated with concrete pillars, such that they would be visible to even laymen.

He said structures that were already sitting on the boundary areas around the territory would be removed and compensation paid to deserving affected developers.

He also noted that the increasing population of the territory necessitated taking steps to stop further encroachments.

Bello noted that in the past, projects were unwittingly cited in parts of Kogi State around the Abaji boundary areas, which he said were not part of the Abuja landmass.

He also mentioned the case of Karshi Ara road that extends to Nasarawa State, being done by the FCTA, as well as well as parts of the FCTA already built up, which he said were assumed to be part of Niger State.

The commission’s Director-General, Dr Muhammad Ahmad, said a joint meeting had been scheduled to review the status of the boundary and to reach an agreement on a new roadmap that would address the challenges of encroachment and counter encroachments.

He advised the FCTA administration and Nasarawa State government to stop granting development permits along the border corridor, pending the conclusion of work.

He said the affected border communities of the FCTA and its neighbouring states should be encouraged to come together and discuss issues of cross broader cooperation to douse tensions and downplay the politics of boundary disputes.

Ahmad also charged the FCTA to undertake a comprehensive census of all developments on the boundary line along the FCT/Nasarawa area in particular for proper records and necessary actions to make the boundary of the FCTA and its neighbours more visible on the ground.
