FCT education secretary advises principals on quality education, conduct

The Education Secretary, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Bala Liman, has advised all school principals in the territory to strive for qualitative education and excellent conduct of students.

Liman gave the advice in Abuja on Monday during a meeting with principals of junior and senior schools in the territory.

He stressed the need for attitudinal and institutional change to improve learning and teaching in the school system.

“This is in order to have holistic change and sustain quality education while exhibiting an acceptable attitude in the teaching and learning process,” he said.

The secretary stated that the principals must work within the stipulated rules and regulations to avoid creating a bad image for the administration.

Liman declared that the education sector is critical to the development of the territory, hence it must not be toyed with.

He warned against absenteeism, lateness, laziness and unnecessary excuses in the school administration which, he said, would not add value to the system.

The secretary asserted that school heads must be role models, impact knowledge and bring up students as responsible individuals for a brighter future.

Liman insisted that everyone in the sector must carry out his/her duty with a high sense of responsibility and desist from conduct that could jeopardise the image of the administration.

He expressed displeasure at the low pace of infrastructure development in schools.

The secretary urged Boards, Agencies and Departments under the secretariat to be proactive and prioritise the needs of the various schools in order to ensure improved students’ academic performance.

According to him, school heads must be able to create conducive learning and safe school environment for students to excel.

Liman also urged principals to provide adequate security to ensure the safety of students and staff, as well as avoid illegal charges that could put a burden on parents and guardians.

The schools’ heads were also tasked on extra moral lessons for terminal classes, diligence, punctuality commitment and working.

He urged the principals to work as teams with their vice-principals and staff to achieve the desired objectives.

The meeting was attended by the FCT Education Secretariat Management Team and all principals of schools in the territory.
