In line with its commitment to engage young people in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), a financial service provider, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), has trained 10 children in the KidsTech programme in Ibadan, Oyo State.
KidsTech Africa is a hands-on coding and technology programme that teaches kids to solve problems innovatively through computer training, as well as nurtures them to become inventors and technology creators in a tech-driven world.
The kids, who were trained for 14 weeks, were given certificates of participation after the training.
Speaking on Saturday at the closing ceremony, FCMB’s Head of Sales Business Development for the Micro-Finance Unit, Friday Nwokolo, said it is a welcome development, adding that the world has gone digital and the younger ones need to be carried along.
He urged parents to ensure that the interest of the children does not wane.
“If you look around, you will find out that most companies today have digitalised their businesses, especially after COVID-19, so technology is a global issue now,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, representative of Strategy Lead for KidsTech Africa, Ishola Kayode, said that KidsTech Africa aligns with the goals four, five, eight and nine of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 agenda, which seeks quality education, gender equality, economic growth and infrastructural development for developing countries.
“Technology has come to stay, African kids are smart, we are extremely smart but the only thing lacking is the platform and that is what we are doing because many of them grab things easily,’’ he said.
On her part, a parent, Mrs Mosunmola Adebowale, lauded FCMB for the initiative of keeping the children busy throughout the vacation.
“Personally, my child really gained a lot because he never had the knowledge of ICT before, but today, he has much to deliver,” she said.
