The Federated Association of Zamfara State Students (FAZAMSS) held its maiden national convention, during which pioneer executives were elected in the state.
The Federated Association of Zamfara State Students is a newly registered national student body. The association emerged as a breakaway faction from the National Union of Zamfara State Students (NUZAMSS), which is currently embroiled in a political crisis.
The inaugural convention took place today in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara state, and was chaired by Comrade Lawal Orbana.
Comrade Mu’awiya A. Ciroma, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee during the FAZAMSS election, declared the election open, announcing that the mode of election would be an open secret ballot. Five (5) accredited delegates from each participating tertiary institution would decide the leadership of the association.
“Some positions were uncontested, while others were keenly contested,” he noted.
Those elected and declared winners by Chairman Electoral Committee Mr. Chiroma are Abubakar Galadima as President, Fadimatu Salisu as Vice President (Internal), Isah Muhammad as Vice President (External), Mahmud Aliyu as Secretary-General, and Musa Muhammad Magami as Assistant Secretary-General of the association.
Others include Yasir Adamu (Financial Secretary), Mubarak Sani (Auditor-General), Rukayya Shuaibu (Treasurer), Hafsat Nura Marafa (Director of Gender), Zainab Almustapha (PRO I), Muhammad Shafiu (PRO II), and Shafiu Sani as Director of Travels and Tours.
The remaining positions are Zainab Hassan (Director of Academic Affairs and Innovation), Umar Abdulmumin (Director of Contacts and Mobilization), Fatima Muazu (Director of Students with Special Needs), Ibrahim Sa’id (Director of Business and Investments), and Zainab Buhari as Director of Welfare and Social.
Earlier, the convener for the newly established FAZAMSS, Comrade Umar Mahmud, disclosed that the new student body is a modification of NUZAMSS and will be a game-changer for Zamfara indigenous students in Nigeria and the diaspora.
He further revealed that FAZAMSS would differ from NUZAMSS as it would be guided by the amended constitution of the association, which makes adequate provisions for checks and balances and the resolution of internal disputes.
“What FAZAMSS will do differently is focus on leadership training for students and other extracurricular innovations for the development of students’ capacity.
“FAZAMSS will be law-abiding and engage with all relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, in its activities.
“It is noteworthy that, for the first time, a peace accord was signed before the Department of State Security Service among all the aspirants,” Mr. Mahmud added.
The convention was witnessed by representatives of the security agencies, while Alhaji Tukur Aliyu, the Director of Students Matters of Zamfara State Scholarship Board, represented the state government at the gorgeous event.
