Fayemi mourns as shot Ekiti assembly member dies

THE member representing Ekiti South West II constituency in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Michael Adedeji, shot in the head by gunmen on Friday, has died.

Following the death of the lawmaker, which was announced in Ado Ekiti, on Monday, Governor Kayode Fayemi, while speaking on the death also on Monday decried the development, saying it was “shocking and unfortunate.”

Governor Fayemi reacted to the killing after the swearing-in of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the Chief of Staff, Mr Biodun Omoleye; and two commissioners, Mr Wale Fapohunda as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and Mr Dapo Kolawole as Commissioner for Finance.

Fayemi said the security apparatuses in the State must fish out the killers and also stop all politically-motivated killings and added that the State would put up new security apparatuses to tackle all forms of killings in the State.

“This death came to us as unfortunate and shocking. But we are going to put up new security measures to ensure that Ekiti is safe for all of us.

“The kind of security we are going to put in place won’t be one that will make government part of security agents as we have in the past. We will allow them to do their jobs while we provide the needed logistics.

“This is a challenge that the security agencies must do more to protect our people. They have to be alive to their responsibilities.”
Adedeji, 40, was shot in the head in Ado Ekiti by unknown gunmen, who attacked him last Friday as he was said to be coming from Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Adeniran Alagbada, while confirming that the death of the lawmaker, said he died on Monday morning at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti (FETHI).

Alagbada told newsmen that after he was shot, not one of his belongings was taken away by his assailants.

He said: “They trailed him from Akure and when he thought he could take a reverse and escape, they shot him at close range from where the killers were hiding. So the killing was predetermined.

“Even another member of the House, Mrs Cecilia Dada, is also being threatened. We have prepared a letter to security agencies and we are going to hold a plenary to decide when the burial will hold.”
