Fashion, expression of one’s inner self — Joseph Daramola

Published by

The creative director of a Nigerian fashion brand, ‘Joe’sential’ has said that fashion is a language everyone speaks, stressing that it is an expression of one’s inner self.

Speaking to Tribune Online recently, Joseph Oluwasegun Daramola, spoke about his ideology about fashion.

“To me, fashion comes like an empty plain sketch pad that gives you the ability to be creative and express yourself through the harmonious use of fabric, colour and texture”.

Joseph, fondly called ‘Joe’, spoke about his humble beginnings in Kaduna and how he transitioned to Lagos to make a name for himself in the industry.

He said, “It all started with an idea following my flair for unique outfits. Back then in 2008, I would sketch a style, get a fabric and sit with my tailor to create the design for me but that wasn’t enough so I decided to learn the art of sewing to enable me to create the style myself. This was done for a while until I came to Lagos which I believe is the heart of fashion in Nigeria”.

According to him, fashion is beyond commercial gain and fame. He said venturing into the industry is affording him the opportunity to creatively synchronise his artistic skills and love for styles with a deeper appreciation for African culture and its heritage.

In Joe’s words, “Seeing that fashion designing stimulates economic growth by creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the runway, from textile production to retail, I am motivated to position right in the industry to be a player that contributes to this growth through persistent creation of unique outfits for both individual and commercial purposes.

“This further allows me to support local artisans, promote sustainable development and create economic opportunities for individuals and communities across Africa and Africans in the diaspora.

“Above all, venturing into fashion for me was a deep fulfilling and purpose-driven endeavour rooted in a passion for creativity and economic growth. And as this industry plays a major role in our every day, I will keep creating amazing styles that will inspire others and be appreciated around the world.”
