Farmers, JDPC seek end to herdsmen/farmers clashes

Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ibarapa chapter, Mr Gbolasere Solomon, has lauded the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Catholic Diocese of Ibadan for convening a stakeholder meeting as a means of tackling and ending the rampant cases of farmers/herdmen clash in the country.

Solomon stated at the meeting on the theme “Achieving Peaceful Coexistence, adding that the Commission’s intervention is timely so that the incessant clashes and bloodshed in the affected parts of the country does not snowball into a national crisis.

“We are not happy with the way tragedies are being recorded in certain parts of the country. All the victims are our brothers and sisters, so we are all concerned about them. If we fold our arms, we down south could be the next victims of the needless bloodletting,” he said.

Fr. Ezekiel Ade Owoeye, the Director of JDPC, represented by Mrs Adenike Ibitara stated that the programme was aimed at finding practicable, implementable solutions to clashes between farmers and herders.

Ibitara, who is of Democracy and Human Rights Group of JPDC said: “One thing both herders and farmers can do is to accept whatever is the truth, they should accept their responsibilities and be willing to accept that certain things will be done for change to take place.”

Present at the meeting include Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Vigilante, Ministry of Agric and  Oyo State, Oyo State Agriculture Development Programme (OYSADEP), Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Soliu Abduqadri among others.
