Fake CP, lawyer, others arrested in Lagos

Published by

A fake Commissioner of Police, a fake lawyer, and ten other suspected criminals have been arrested by the police in Lagos State in the last few days.

The fake lawyer, however, claimed that he was given the fake I.D. card and police singlet by some policemen to guide a hotel where he was working.

The suspects were paraded before newsmen on Monday by the image maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, on behalf of the state commissioner of police, Idowu Owohunwa.

The fake commissioner of police was identified as Emmanuel Nwagu, while the fake lawyer was identified as Ibrahim Bello.

Hundeyin told newsmen that, “On September 2, at about 4:40 p.m., the suspect visited the police premises and introduced himself as a Commissioner of Police.”

“Immediately he introduced himself as a Commissioner of Police, the officers at the command fully regarded him as such, but upon questioning, he was discovered to be an impersonator.”

The Lagos Police image maker also stated, “He was immediately arrested, and a search was conducted at his abode. A Deputy Commissioner of Police Warrant Card, an Assistant Commissioner of Police Warrant Card, a Kenwood walkie-talkie, a police camouflage singlet, and a face cap were recovered from him.”

“Investigation has revealed that he had been doing it for a long time, and only God knows how many people he has duped with such a fake identity.”

SP Hundeyin Alao stated, “We are happy that he has been arrested, and from today’s briefing on, he will be arraigned in court.”

The fake police CP told newsmen, “It is true I am not a policeman. The commissioner of police’s Identity card was given to me by some RRS operatives, who came to guard the hotel where I was working.”

“I was the only one the ID card was given to. The RRS operatives gave it to me so that whenever the police wanted to harass me, I should show it to them. The police T-shirt was also given to me to wear.”

“A police cap was given to me to protect myself from harassment. The walkie-talkie belongs to the Church where I work now, not mine. I paid the RRS policemen to produce it for me; everything was given to me last year.”

The suspect also stated, “I have not used the CP identity card before anywhere else, except the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) that impounded my car.”

“Then I told them I was a retired CP, yet I was taken to their office, and my vehicle was booked.”

He narrated, “On the fateful day I was arrested, I came to the command to facilitate the release of someone who was arrested.”

“That was how I was nabbed for impersonating the commissioner of police; I regret my actions,” he lamented.

The fake lawyer, Bello, told newsmen that he had gone to court to file a suit against a landlord following a complaint by one of his tenants when he was arrested on the court premises.

He, however, denied impersonating a lawyer, saying that he was an estate agent but admitted going to court premises in a lawyer’s robe.

He said, “I always go about with my robe in case a lawyer doesn’t have the attire to appear in court. That’s why I always go about with it.”

“A lawyer who doesn’t have it can come to me and use it. That’s why I’m always there. On the fateful day I was arrested, I went to court to check on a lawyer.” Bello claimed.

He also added, “All the law books I found with me, it was because I love reading books that I bought them. I read law books because of the nature of the job I do. I regret my action.”
