Firstly, what is Biafra?
Biafra, officially called the Republic of Biafra was recognized in the Eastern part of Nigeria in 1967. It was organized by the Igbos under the military office of C. Odumegwu Ojukwu the governor of the Eastern region of Nigeria. The main essence of the republic is to gain Independence from Nigeria.
Biafra was mostly populated by 67% Igbos, Efik, Ibibio, and the Ijaws. Having four capitals – Enugu (1967) Umuahia (1967–1969) Owerri (1969–1970) Awka (1970) with the largest City called Onitsha. They speak English Igbo, Ibibio, Ijaw, Efik, and Ejagham.
During the Biafran war, Jimi Hendrix a rock star legend benefited from it by performing along with 60s folk singer Joan Baez. They performed free of charge and raise money for refugees of the Biafra-Nigeria Civil War.
What you might not know. The Biafrans largely manufactured their own weaponry. They received only non-political Joint Church Aid assistance. During the war, between 500,000 and 3,000,000 refugees fled the county. OAU never assisted the Biafrans in the war but received the support of African countries such as Tanzania, Zambia, Gabon and Côte d’Ivoire. The war ended in 1970.
