Exploring African identity through art: Works of Nigerian artist Samson Bakare

Samson Bakare is a Nigerian artist whose work explores African identity in a contemporary context. Born in 1993, Samson’s passion for the arts was ignited at a young age, inspired by his architect father in the city of Lagos.

He went on to pursue his love for art by studying at the prestigious Yaba College of Technology, where he graduated from the School of Art.

Samson’s art is characterized by bold, vibrant colours and a unique style that merges traditional and contemporary techniques. He is a versatile artist who works across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

His work centres around the propagation of black identity and values in contemporary and retrospective contexts while representing historical scenes.

One of the things that make Samson’s work stand out is his ability to capture the essence of African culture and history while infusing it with a contemporary flair. He uses his art to tell stories that are relevant to the modern-day African experience, highlighting the beauty and diversity of African cultures. His pieces often feature African men and women in traditional attire, engaged in everyday activities or depicted in historical scenes.

Samson’s exploration of African identity and culture is not limited to his artistic expression alone. He is also an active participant in the African art scene, working to promote and celebrate the work of other African artists. He is a founding member of the Art Twenty-One Collective, an organization that is dedicated to supporting contemporary African artists through exhibitions, publications, and other initiatives.

Samson’s talent has not gone unnoticed outside of Nigeria. His works have been exhibited in various international exhibitions, and his art has also been featured in various international publications, including Art Africa and Contemporary And. As he continues to blaze trails in the world of art, there is no doubt that Samson Bakare is a name to watch out for in the coming years.
