Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to explore non-violent means towards resolving the logjam occasioned by the unconstitutional change of government in the neighbouring Niger Republic.
Professor Egbewole, who is a Fellow of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, said that while every effort at restoring constitutional order must be explored, Nigeria should not at this time lead a war coalition against her neighbour, no matter the provocations.
The VC, while welcoming participants to the opening ceremony of the maiden KU8 Consortium International conference, hosted by the University of Ilorin, titled “Responsibility is Power”, observed that war is not as straightforward as Mathematics and things don’t always go as expected, a lesson, he explained, that some superpowers have learned and are still learning after militarily confronting their presumed adversaries.
Professor Egbewole urged the leadership of ECOWAS to carefully weigh all the possible options and consider other factors, such as military-industrial complexities using the African region to flex their muscles and making life increasingly miserable for our impoverished people, before taking a final decision on the impasse.
While recalling similar past events in human history, the renowned Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law insisted that there is no credible alternative to dialogue and negotiation.
Speaking on the reason behind the establishment of the KU8, Professor Egbewole said that the idea was conceived, nurtured, and developed to promote development through cooperation among eight of the universities currently operating within Kwara State, saying that team building is central to the achievement of goals and objectives.
Professor Egbewole, who is the Chairman of the Consortium, explained that “one of the dangers posed by globalisation is the neglect of self, the immediate environment, and an obsession with others”.
He said that while many universities in Nigeria have active collaborations with foreign universities, they are complete strangers to their neighbours, whereas international recognition should always be complemented by local relevance.
The University of Ilorin VC explained that the world is aligning its forces and universities cannot be left behind, saying that “universities in Nigeria have options to integrate or disintegrate, have choices to either continue to lament or take responsibility”.
He believes that “it is when we blame others that we give our power away. But when we accept responsibility and take action, we take back the power to transform our lives. I believe that knowledge is not just power, responsibility is power as well”.
