Experts harp on importance of sustainability to business, governance strategies

Experts and participants at the two-day Certified Sustainable Business (CSB) Conference have harped on the need for stakeholders to place more emphasis on sustainability in developing business and governance strategies.

At the event, which addressed key issues related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors for creating climate-resilient cities, was organized by the Sustainable Green Environment Initiative (SGEi) in partnership with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Deloitte in Lagos.

The Chairman of SGEi and host of the CSB Conference, Dr. Sanmi Olowosile stressed that developing countries and businesses should consider sustainability in their plans and programs for effective results.

He added that developing nations” often bear the brunt of climate change impacts and emphasized the role of sustainability in placing people at the center of economic, environmental, and social well-being.”

According to a statement released after the event, the organisers said, ” Swarupa Deshpande, Oil and Gas Market Leader at Veritas, drew attention to the environmental challenges faced by Nigeria. She called for businesses to rethink their strategies, emphasizing the irresponsible nature of industrial development at the cost of the planet’s survival.

“Temitope Kolade, Senior Manager for ESG and Climate Change Services at Anderson, NG, underlined the need for Nigeria and Africa to proactively adapt to a global energy transition.

“Emphasizing the shift from oil to gas and renewable energy, he said, “Even if you would continue as a country to rely on oil resources and oil revenue, the world would have moved away to gas and maybe to renewable energy. And so the automobile companies right now are saying to you that at some point in time, they would stop producing the regular (diesel, petrol powered) vehicles, they’re moving to electric vehicles.

“So even if Nigeria, for instance, say that we want to produce all the crude that is in the ground, who buys them? Because the world is no longer seeing the need for that. So it’s important for every facet of the society to think about it very quickly because it’s something that impacts on our continued existence and our sustainability,” Kolade told participants at the event.

“Abiola Oshuniyi, the Chief Responsibility Officer at ParallelPoint Consult, emphasized the proactive nature of sustainability, urging for greater African representation in decision-making processes.

“He advocated for those with sustainability expertise to provide technical insights to politicians, noting, “We cannot have all politicians understand sustainability, but we can have more political awareness about the impact and the importance of sustainability, which is where young people play a critical role. Because you know, Gen. Z younger people are more passionate about the environment, are more passionate about the future.”
