Experts caution against inappropriate use of antimicrobials in humans

The Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, in conjunction with the Department of Animal Health Technology, hosted the Inaugural Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Campaign to mark the 2024 World AMR Awareness Week with the theme “Educate.

Act Now “Dr. Ifeoluwapo Akanbi, the Head of the Animal Health Technology Department, who spearheaded the events, stated that the department is tasked with educating communities on animal health-related issues including antimicrobial resistance, and promoting responsible antimicrobial use in animals and humans.

This was accomplished through community roadshows followed by free medical screenings, consultations, and medication dispensing for over 100 individuals in FCAH&PT, sponsored by Nikzar Medical Centre, Bode Igbo, Ibadan, to underscore the importance of medical laboratory tests in combating AMR.

The events concluded on November 25, 2024, with a hybrid AMR awareness summit featuring Dr. Olusegun Ajisefinni, the Director of Clinical Documentation Integrity Department at Cedars-Sinai Hospital Systems in Beverly Hills, California, USA, Dr. Ajisefinni, a 2020 graduate of FCAH&PT, Ibadan, delivered an in-depth presentation on antimicrobial resistance in the environment, highlighting the interconnectedness of the environment, animals, and humans, as well as the driving factors behind AMR in these sectors. Drawing from real-life experiences, he emphasized the global ramifications of AMR as a critical threat.

Additionally, Dr. Olapupo Oyetota, a medical doctor at the Medical Centre, FCAH&PT, Ibadan, strongly advised participants against self-medication, as well as the underuse, overuse, and sharing of medications, in order to combat AMR.
