Experts call for more investment in health sector, end to quackery

For Nigeria to see more improvement in its health indices, the Federal Government has been urged to invest more in the sector.

This was the central submission of speakers at the 2024 World Orthopaedic Cast Technology Day held at the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta and organised by Ayoade Health Foundation in conjunction with Association of Orthopaedic Plaster Technicians of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter.

Founder of the foundation, Oni Adebayo, who was represented by Miss Patricia Okeke, also urged other non-governmental organisations to invest in the health sector because it is financially intensive, adding such commitment propelled the foundation to help patients with clubfoot with cash and medical materials.

He said: “There is a need for more investment in the sector from governments, NGOs and other bodies. Government alone cannot do it.

“Governments are trying their best but they need to channel more energy into this area because a lot of people are not aware. They have to create awareness. This is very crucial that they should provide support in any way they can to put a smile on the face of the patients.”

The Head of Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma and Plastering Unit, Dr. Abidemi Fadimu, said investment is a strong catalyst for development in the health sector.

Fadimu noted that the major purpose of orthopaedic technicians is to undertake bone fracture management and correction, hence, adding that they must be appreciated.

He stated further that it is unfortunate that most people report to the hospital quite late, thereby making the necessary treatment and corrections to their cases almost impossible.

Fadimu therefore implored members of the society to report any case of fracture to hospitals immediately for proper treatment.

In his address, a consultant orthopaedic, Dr. Idris Aremu, admonished members of the association to eradicate quackery in their profession, saying as good and effective orthopaedic cast is, it can wreak havoc if it is not done by a professional.

He thereafter appreciated the FMC Medical Director, Professor Musa Olomu and his management team for their support in terms of training members of the association.
