Expert leads fight against TB, mobilises stakeholders for prompt action

Dr Olubunmi Ogbodu, leading the Anadach Team’s private sector component in the USAID TB LON 3 project, urges stakeholders to join forces to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria.

Anadach, a global healthcare strategic consulting firm, is dedicated to providing innovative solutions to healthcare systems in Africa.

Nigeria bears the highest TB burden in Africa and is among the top eight globally, with two-thirds of new TB cases worldwide.

Shockingly, over 120,000 Nigerians succumbed to TB in 2019, constituting over 8.5% of global deaths.

On March 24th, World Tuberculosis Day highlights the need for heightened efforts to combat the global TB epidemic. Dr. Ogbodu emphasised the pivotal role of the private sector in Nigeria’s TB fight.

Dr. Ogbodu, a seasoned pharmacist and public health expert, champions multisectoral involvement for impactful public health interventions.

She stressed the importance of private sector engagement, especially in advocacy, awareness, and sustainable financing for TB treatment.

At a recent event in collaboration with Oando Plc commemorating World TB Day, Dr. Ogbodu elucidated TB signs and symptoms and advocated for workplace awareness and screening. She urges employers to support TB patients and their families emotionally and financially.

Transformative actions from all stakeholders, led by the government, are crucial to enhancing advocacy, awareness, and financing for TB treatment.

Dr Ogbodu underscores the need for a workplace TB policy and investment case to bridge global gaps in reducing TB incidence and notified cases.

Emphasising the importance of a collaborative approach between the public and private sectors, Dr. Ogbodu stresses the need to improve the Tuberculosis Public-Private Mix.

This collaboration aims to broaden access to TB diagnosis and treatment while securing additional funding to meet the United Nations’ 2030 goal of ending TB.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Ogbodu urges unity in the fight against TB, stating, “Together, we can unite to end TB.”
