AN expert in animal science, ruminant nutrition and sustainable livestock production, Dr (Mrs) Olayimika Tawose, has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, unlock Nigeria’s livestock possibilities.
Dr Tawose, a recognised animal science expert, with over 16 years of experience in research, teaching, extension and consultancy, made the call after the Federal Government’s recent initiatives to revamp the livestock sector as a significant step towards transforming the industry.
He said that the launch of the national livestock transformation plan and other efforts demonstrated a commitment of the Federal Government to improving livestock production and enhancing food security.
Tawose, who has contributed to advancing feed resource innovations, improving food security and climate-smart agriculture, said Nigeria’s livestock industry is at a critical juncture, requiring urgent reforms to ensure a sustainable future.
“In achieving these, the nation must build on the recent government’s momentum, by prioritising industrialisation, genetic improvement, precision livestock production, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to optimise feed utilisation, and enhancing animal welfare.
“More Industrialists need to delve into modernised livestock production, coupled with an enabling environment for us to achieve economies of scale and meet the demands of a growing population,” Tawose said.
She further said that the government should invest more in research funding and capacity building of professionals.
