PROFESSOR Okeychukwu Onyejekwe, a governance expert, has advised Nigerian leaders to ensure good governance to
Onyejekwe, former African Governance Expert, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, made this observation in Abuja on Monday in a paper he presented at the inauguration of Project Free Nigeria, a political forum.
He emphasised that good governance was about values and ethics that provided basis for compact between citizens and the state.
He said good governance was cardinal to democracy because the two comprised values, principles and ethics that would lead to optimal human development.
According to him, the anchor of the principles is people’s sovereignty which means that the parliaments are acting as agents of the citizens.
“The parliaments, therefore, must act with the highest ethical standards and probity, adhering to the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, accessibility, accountability and the rule of law, among other values.
“This will ensure the legitimacy and sustainability of the political framework and the state,’’ he said.
Onyejekwe also observed that democratic governance would ensure that political representation was not mere symbolic, but substantive and sustainable.
In his speech, Mr Edward Olutoke, the National Coordinator, Project Free Nigeria Forum, said Nigeria needed sincere leaders.
According to him, citizens should come together and canvass for citizen-based political parties that could address the plights of the poor.
The problem in governance in Nigeria has been between the rich and the poor; the rich see the poor as objects of political exploitations without tangible welfare after all,’’ he observed.
Project Free Nigeria, a political forum, was inaugurated in Abuja by some concerned youths to mark the 18th year of democracy in Nigeria.
The forum is entitled: “Good Governance Matters: Ethics and values are the Foundation of Good Governance’’.
