Exclusive Interview with Mercy John Otisi: The Vision Behind SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd

Mercy John Otisi, the creative director of SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd, is a designer with a strong foundation in illustration and garment construction. Many of her designs are known for blending cultural richness with modern styling. In this exclusive interview, she delves into her design philosophy, creative process, and the evolution of SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd.

  1. You are the founder of SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd. What core elements define your brand, and how do you ensure consistency across collections?

SleyCrafts is centred around three factors: culture, skill, and versatility. I ensure that each piece embodies these three qualities, which helps us maintain consistency across all our collections. Before designing, I define the message I wish to convey through each collection, which allows room for experimentation and evolution.

  1. Your journey in fashion has been shaped by illustration, garment construction, and product design. Which of these disciplines do you connect with the most, and how does it influence your creative process?

Illustration holds a special place in my heart because it’s where every design begins. It’s the most unrestricted part of the process, where imagination flows freely without the constraints of technical execution. My ability to illustrate designs enhances my ability to construct garments.

  1. What construction techniques do you frequently use, and are there any you’d like to explore more?

I frequently use French seams and bias binding to ensure clean finishes, especially when working with delicate fabrics like lace. I also incorporate pleating to add dimension to my designs. In the future, I’d love to explore more advanced draping techniques.

  1. How do you approach designing for different body types?

Accurate measurements are essential for a well-constructed garment. When designing, I prioritise proportion over standard sizing. I also consider flexibility—ensuring that a design can be adjusted to suit different body types without losing its original shape.

  1. How do you see SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd evolving in the next five years?

I see the brand expanding into more product categories, particularly accessories that complement the clothing line. I also aim to strengthen SleyCrafts’ presence in international markets while maintaining its Nigerian identity. Sustainability is another focus. I am actively researching ways to integrate more eco-conscious practices into our production without compromising our long-standing integrity.

  1. Any final thoughts you want to share with us?

Yes, any designer who chooses to swim in the waters of the Nigerian fashion industry must master the basics before chasing trends. A strong foundation in pattern-making, construction, and fit will serve better than following what’s popular at the moment. Fashion is constantly evolving, which can be quite challenging. Most importantly, designers should never stop learning.
