Ex-LP gov candidate urges Lagos govt to suspend LG poll

THE current economic recession does not make the conduct of local government election feasible in Lagos State, a former governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Dr Rotimi Olulana, has opined.

He told Nigerian Tribune that the utmost concern of all stakeholders now should be how to quickly rescue the economy and avoid creating further haemorrhage in the political system.

He said using scarce state resources to conduct local government elections would not usher in substantial benefits to the masses, advocating caretaker committees to run all local councils across the country.

“In fairness, if I have my way, I will advise Lagos State to slow down on the issue of local government election. The economic crisis is what we should be addressing. The money that would be spent on the exercise, we should be investing it in another area of need. Let the caretaker committees be there for now and be so far and running the affairs of the councils.

“I will advise the Federal Government to seek the collaboration of the National Assembly to pass into law that local government elections be suspended for now to enable the government use the money meant for the exercise in addressing the economic problem facing the country right now,” he said.
