Prince Obalanlege becomes Olota-elect

Prince Abdul-Kabir Adeyemi Obalanlege

A new traditional ruler, Prince Abdul-Kabir Adeyemi Obalanlege, has been elected by kingmakers in Ota as the 13th Olota of Ota in Ado -Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He is to succeed the late Oba Moshood Alani Oyede, who joined his ancestors in 2016.

The new Olota of Ota elect was elected following a unanimous vote by five surviving out of 12 kingmakers of the town.

His choice was made known on Tuesday, at the headquarters of the local government, by the kingmakers and was supervised by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr Adewale Dada.

Speaking with newsmen, the Ekerin of Oota, Chief Bamgboye Akanni Osunlabi, described the selection process as a successful exercise

He said, ” I have the honour to present the certificate of return today, to the new Oba elect, but the situation of things here now will not make me go into details of the exercise. I want to express my joy for this very successful exercise which took us a lot of exercises to arrive at this decision we made today even including consultation of IFA Oracle to guild our decision.

“The result is 5-0, we have five kingmakers and all of them voted for Prince Adeyemi Obalanlege.

“We considered so many things such as educational background, family background among others.”

Obalanlege, 52, is an alumnus of the Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), emerged the new the traditional ruler having defeated 22 other contestants.

The new Olota elect is the United Kingdom based journalist and Senior Lecturer at the Crescent University, Abeokuta.

He was born in Lagos on the 28th of August, 1966 to Prince Hassan Taiwo Obalanlege of Ijemo Compound and Mrs Mutiat Afolake Obalanlege (Nee Anjorin) of Isoloshi Compound, Ota.

He won a landslide victory by polling five votes to emerge against Prince Gbolagade Akinboyede, Prince Abiodun Akinboyede and Prince Oluwatoyin Adeyanju.

Dr Obalanlege is a member of the National Union of Journalists, United Kingdom, a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. He had before now lectured at the University of East London, England, University of Lincoln, England. He presently lectures at the school of Post Graduate Studies, Crescent University, Abeokuta in the Department of Mass Communication.

The Oba elect in his remarks said the town would be liberated with his ascension to the throne.
