Dancehall artiste, Ogar Emmanuel, who is popularly referred to as Dr Swag, has a unique voice that has wormed him into the minds of his fans. He speaks with SEGUN ADEBAYO about his fast-growing fame and how he intends to keep releasing songs that will inspire people.
How did your music career start?
Music has always been part of me. I love listening to music and it has become a big part of me since childhood. It didn’t start immediately though, I had to work on my skills and in order to know that music will pay the bills for me in the long run. So, I will say my music carrer started since I was young but I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth ride because quite a number of issues have come but I have managed to stay afloat.
What would say could have inspired you at that age?
I can’t tell you one thing actually inspired me, but I know that everything I see or feel comes with some kind of imspiration that I can’t explain. My inspiration comes from different places that I visit. The people I come across and the music that I listen to. I understand how it works for me, so anytime I find myself in that kind of situation, I don’t let it pass without bringing out something important from it. So, essentially, my inspiration comes from everything. It could actually come from anywhere.
How would you describe your genre of music?
I try not to restrict myself to a genre of music, but I am deeply involved with Raggae.I do raggae dance hall as commercial songs for now because of the type of music most music lovers and listeners flow with this time. I also like to sing about the beauty of women and how they make the world go round. The music market demands that you have to flow with the trend or else, one will be kicked out of the game. Commercial songs are selling now because people love to listen to them, so I try to switch the game once in a while. In order to maintain the market value and acceptance, we have to do it the way they do it, but that does not mean I can’t do other genre of music.
You have quite a number of songs that have established you as among the artistes to watch out for, how do yu feel?
I feel very great. I feel like I have to keep working hard in order to keep my fan base intact. It has not been easy dropping hit songs back to back, but I am happy that my fans have come to accept every song I have dropped in the last few years. From Hustler Boy, Bless me, Righteousness, Non stop, many others.
