The student journalists under the aegis of Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM) of Esep le Berger University, Cotonou, Benin Republic have been urged to leverage writing as a launchpad for building a budding career in the 21st century.
Speaking at the symposium organised by the association during their 2023 ESEP Media Week, the guest speaker and Educational Consultant, Mrs Chinenye Esther Samuel, charged the students to make writing their passion and pleasure.
In furtherance, the guest speaker stated that though what gets more likes on social media is trash, she advised the upcoming writers not to be discouraged if they don’t get likes for whatever they drop on the internet.
“Just keep writing, for someone out there might like your work without commenting but one day, your work would be recognised and respected,” she encouraged.
While explaining the reasons why people write, Mrs Samuel stated that writing is one way to tell the world who you are and what you can do. She further identified other reasons as writing for oneself, others, to leave legacies and to improve one’s lot in life.
She stressed again that anyone can write as there is a book in everyone. “Every author has an aspect of his life in his book. Look deep inside you, you will see your book,” she said.
The student journalists were equally tipped on practical steps to create content for social media platforms to include defining of message and target audience, selecting suitable social platforms, researching and writing valuable content to feed readers.
“Position yourself for wealth as a budding influential writer, eradicate limiting beliefs and have a solution mindset,” she charged.
Meanwhile, as part of the celebration of their media week, the student communicators paid a visit to an orphanage home, played a novelty match. The highpoint of the celebration was dinner/award/media queen pageant and launching of a newly-acquired teleprompter for the studio in the department.
