Enugu police arrest alleged kidnappers, rescue victim

THE police in Enugu State have arrested four persons suspected to be kidnappers, while a victim was rescued from them.

Disclosing this in Enugu on Monday, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amarizu, said that security operatives in Nkanu-East Local Government Area of the state, in the early hours of Monday, rescued the kidnapped victim at Ugbawka forest in the area through intelligence report.

Amarizu said that “the suspects arrested gave their names as Saidu, Nwobodo, Nwankwo and Ogbu (surnames withheld).

According to the police image maker, “On Sunday, December 4, at about 10a.m., gunmen suspected to be kidnappers operating in a  Golf vehicle with registration number DQ 105 ENU, stormed Umuaragu in Nara community of Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State and abducted  an 18-year-old girl (name withheld).”

He added that the alleged kidnappers later abandoned their Golf car on noticing that police operatives had been contacted and fled into the forest with their victim. He also said that they commenced negotiating a ransom of N15million from the forest.

“Following intelligence information by the police operatives, one Ogbu Emeka, being one of the suspected gang members, was nabbed and revelations made guided the operatives in the rescue of the victim unhurt from the forest, while other members of the gang were arrested  on Monday at about 5.40am, where they allegedly hid to avoid arrest.

“Also recovered was the car used for the crime. Suspects are now helping security operatives in their investigations in relation to their nefarious activities, while the victim has been reunited with his family,” he stated further.

Meanwhile, the state police command has assured members of the public of their safety before, during and after the yuletide.
