Enugu governor swears in state electoral commission members

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Monday swore in the Chairman and members of the newly reconstituted Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) whose appointments were announced last week.

The new chairman of the commission, Dr Mike Ezegwu Ajiogwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the other members of the state electoral body took oath of office administered by the State Solicitor General, Victor Umeribe.

Speaking after the new electoral umpires were sworn in, Governor Ugwuanyi said their appointments were based on their track records, adding that there was a clear need to fill the existing vacancies in the commission following the end of tenures of the former chairman and some other members of the body. He explained that this was in accordance with Section 3 (2) of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission Law.

He explained that in line with section 13 (1) of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission Law, a new Secretary in the person of Mr Tagbo  Nnama, was appointed from the State Public Service to the commission.

“I am confident that the appointment of these men and women of high repute, competence, and experience as the chairman and members of ENSIEC would usher in a new era of efficiency and progress in the discharge of the commission’s mandate”, said the governor.

He noted that with the new development, his administration will now proceed to tackle the issues of funding and other logistics that will pave the way for the immediate commencement of political activities at the third tiers of government in the state, urging the members to live above
board in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Dr Ajiogwu SAN, who responded on behalf of the others expressed their appreciation for the appointments and told the governor that they were aware of the enormity of the responsibility required to discharge their new assignment, pledging that with God on their side, they will not fail.

Other members included Mrs. Jane C. Eneh, Hon Chris Ogbonna, Hon Collins Okenyi, and Hon David Okeke Ngene – Electoral Commissioner, Engr Mrs. MaryRose Abba – Electoral Commissioner, Hon Emeka Geoffrey Ede – Electoral Commissioner and Dr Green E. Anike-Nweze – Electoral Commissioner.
