Enugu Government trains over 250 school principals

Determined to improve the standard of education, the Enugu State Government has organised a three-day capacity building workshop for principals of public secondary schools in the state.

The workshop organised by the Enugu State Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) in partnership with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State and sponsored by the Enugu State Government, took place at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu from April 7 to 9, 2022.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop themed “Principals and Youths Development in secondary schools in Enugu state: Rebuilding for a Better Future”, the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, said the quality of future leaders in any nation depends on the quality of students produced by secondary schools.

Governor Ugwuanyi emphasized that no nation made reasonable progress without quality education and reiterated the commitment of his administration to building capacity.

Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze, the Governor said the workshop which is a “very important human development programme is dear to his heart as the principals are field marshals making sure that government education policies are carried out effectively.”

Prof Eze commended NIPSS for the partnership which he noted would empower the principals to perform better.

According to him; “no matter what funds is provided, if not well managed, it becomes a waste,” adding that workshop “is aimed at equipping the principals with modern-day leadership and management techniques which will aid service delivery in the education sector.

“We believe that after this training, the Principals will take whatever they’ve learnt to their various schools and this will, in turn, improve the quality of education in our state,” while assuring that the training will be continuous.

The Team Leader of the resource persons and Director of Studies at NIPSS, Prof. Oluwafunmilayo Para-Mallam said the workshop for the principals is key to sustaining the quality of education in secondary schools.

Earlier in her speech, the permanent secretary of PPSMB, Dr Favour Ugwuanyi, thanked Governor Ugwuanyi for providing the necessary logistics for the training adding that “this is the first time this kind of training is taking place in this part of the country.”
