Entertainment lawyer, Kabir Adeyemo, advocates for artist-friendly contracts, transparency

Entertainment lawyer Kabir Adeyemo has advocated for more artist-friendly contracts in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, calling for equitable terms and increased transparency in agreements involving creatives.

Speaking during the Creatives Ming Twitter Space, Adeyemo stressed the urgent need to reform legal practices that often leave artists vulnerable to exploitation.

Adeyemo, who has built a reputable career working with some of the industry’s most celebrated figures, emphasized that many creatives are not adequately protected under existing contracts.

“Artistes deserve agreements that recognize their value and protect their intellectual property,” he said. “We need to move beyond exploitative arrangements and begin to prioritize fairness and transparency in our legal processes.”

As an Intellectual Property and Entertainment lawyer, Adeyemo has carved a niche in championing the rights of creatives. His extensive legal work includes offering strategic advisory services on contracts, negotiations, and business decisions that have helped artists retain ownership and control of their work. This has earned him trust and recognition among industry leaders.

“In too many cases, creatives sign away the rights to their work without fully understanding the implications,” he noted. “Our role as lawyers is to ensure they’re fully informed and adequately protected.” Adeyemo pointed out that artists should not be treated as passive beneficiaries in business deals but as key stakeholders whose creative contributions drive the industry forward.

He encouraged artists to seek professional guidance before signing any deal, highlighting that early legal intervention can save them from long-term damage.

“There’s a growing awareness among creatives, but more still needs to be done in educating them on the importance of legal counsel,” he said. “No artist should go into any agreement without knowing what they’re getting into.”

Adeyemo also called on record labels, talent managers, and other industry players to adopt more ethical business practices.

He emphasised the importance of building relationships based on mutual respect rather than taking advantage of artists’ lack of legal knowledge.

“Sustainable success in the industry is built on fairness, not exploitation,” he asserted.

During the session, he encouraged collaboration between legal professionals and creative communities to develop contract templates that balance both commercial and creative interests.

“We must collectively set new standards for what fair and artist-friendly contracts look like,” he said, “and that begins with honest conversations like the one we’re having today.”

Adeyemo’s participation in the Creatives Ming Twitter Space reinforced his position as a leading voice in the push for artists’ rights. With a strong track record of advocating for equitable industry practices, he continues to shape the evolving legal landscape of Nigeria’s entertainment sector.
